The gradual internationalisation of the economy poses challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises. Processes, such as "globalisation" and "European integration", will continue to create structural changes in the economic environment.
In this context, the current research interests of the Austrian Institute for SME Research are to investigate issues such as the business strategies used in internationalisation and cross-border activities of SMEs, especially with a view to the process and impact of European integration. Further focus points are regional (e.g. cluster) development and in more general terms the analysis of regional economic policy.
