The first quarter of 2020 was characterized by the corona pandemic and the impact of measures to prevent its spread. As of Monday, 16 March 2020, all stores that are not required to provide basic services to the population had to be closed.
As a result, in March 2020 sales in the Austrian stationary retail sector fell by more than 16%, which led to a drop in sales of around € 800 million (net, excl. VAT) compared to March 2019.
While the high-turnover food retail sector had a positive impact on the development in March 2020 with a plus of about 17 %, the fashion sectors (clothing retail, shoe and leather goods retail) suffered sales declines of more than 60 %.
