This study examines how far Viennese companies integrate LGBTIQ+ aspects into their diversity management. It is based on a literature analysis, interviews and a survey of 6,380 companies. The aim was to identify existing and planned measures, as well as previous experiences. The results provide recommendations for companies and policymakers, and offer an overview of relevant contact points.
The survey shows that six out of ten companies in Vienna are implementing measures to promote diversity. Thirty-eight percent are also explicitly committed to the LGBTIQ target group. Large companies and companies in the personal services sector are particularly active in this area. Just under 40% of companies do not take any measures to promote equal opportunities or diversity, citing a lack of need or relevance of diversity, sexual orientation, and gender identity in the work context.
The implementation of LGBTIQ diversity management has primarily positive effects, with negative effects hardly noticeable. The majority of LGBTIQ-friendly companies report an improved working atmosphere, increased employee satisfaction, and better employee retention, as well as increased innovation. Support from company management and the approval and involvement of the workforce are crucial for successful implementation.
Diversity should be anchored in a holistic diversity management strategy and underpinned by concrete goals and responsibilities. LGBTIQ-friendly measures such as specific training courses, LGBTIQ-sensitive communication, or the option of self-ID can contribute to inclusion in a targeted manner. The public sector can create an appropriate legal framework and increase corporate willingness to engage in LGBTIQ diversity management by taking a positive stance on LGBTIQ issues.
