KMU Forschung Austria has evaluated the “Industry-Related Dissertations” programme for the period from 2014 to 2025.
The programme aims to improve the availability of qualified research staff for Austrian industry, to facilitate early-career researchers entry into the profession from outside the academic system, and to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry. Funding is provided for industry-oriented doctoral projects in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. The evaluation serves to assess the impact and the achievement of objectives of the funding scheme, as well as to derive recommendations for future calls for proposals.
A total of 317 PhD projects at non-university research institutions (57 %) and in companies (43 %) benefited from the funding. The funded organisations rate the programme very highly, as it enhances expertise in research, technology and innovation (RTI), facilitates access to research staff and strengthens cooperation with universities. For the doctoral candidates, it represents a gateway into industrial research.
To further develop the programme, it is recommended that the application caps per organisation be retained and that funds continue to be set aside to promote career opportunities for women. No further quantitative restrictions should be imposed on thematic calls for proposals. Instead, a minimum budget with an open thematic scope should be made available. To support the completion of doctoral theses, for example, an extension of the project duration or greater flexibility regarding the project timeline should be considered. At universities, efforts should be made to increase the programme’s visibility.
The evaluation of the "Industry-related Dissertations" program was carried out on behalf of the FFG - Austrian Research Promotion Agency.
